One cold and frosty evening a friend and I decided to do something different for a change and treat ourselves to a touch of luxury.
The skies were clear and the stars sparkled, it was the perfect evening to go for a meal at Drapers Hall Restaurant, in St Mary’s Place, Shrewsbury.
The setting was perfect for such an evening. As we entered into the large yet cosy building we looked around us; the deep coloured rooms and beautifully laid tables invited us in and there were warm fires crackling in the fireplaces as we sat down at our candlelit table.
When the menu was laid before us we were amazed at the wide choice of meals, which catered well for both vegetarians and meat eaters. There were so many mouth-watering dishes available that it took us a while to choose.
But those waiting on us did not mind our slow deliberation and it was good not to feel rushed.
First we chose starters of a tapas platter of tapenade, tomato salsa, guacamole, aioli, olives and a selection of homemade breads for £6 and tempura battered mushrooms with sauces at £6. The warm selection of bread smelt beautiful and were complemented well with the different sauces. The battered mushrooms were so morish with no hint of grease.
We decided to go for fish for our main courses. I chose roasted cod escalope with a herb crust, crispy pancetta presented mushrooms and truffles priced at £17.50. My friend opted for the handline-caught fillet of sea bass with sweet sour fried cubes of vegetables and a light tomato sauce costing £17.50.
Both meals had a delicate taste and were arranged thoughtfully on the plate. The fish was cooked well and although the portions were large it did not leave you feeling over-full. The vegetables were plentiful and full of taste.
And of course we had to have dessert. My friend decided on a selection of ice cream whereas I pushed the boat out and went for the baked Alaska pudding. The large baked Alaska could have been suitable to share and was full of sponge cake and ice cream inside a meringue casing.
Although the meals were pricey, we were not disappointed with the quality and taste. Drapers is definitely a great place if you want to treat yourself to a good meal.
