Plea for less boring area

A heartfelt plea has been made directly by youngsters to the borough council to make their community ‘less boring’.

Triplets Leah, Lauren and Micha Jackson and their friends Stephanie Ward, Alice Allsop and Lois Boyle, all 11, even included a plan of what they wanted along with their petition.

They collected 29 signatures in support of their idea to provide a bench, slide and swing on a small grassed area on Washford Road, Meole Brace, which is close to all their homes.

Then the girls, who all go to Meole Junior School, knocked on the door of borough councillor Mike Owen, who lives across the road, and asked for his help.

Mr Owen said: “A group of young ladies from Peters Park in Meole Brace visited my home recently and presented me with a petition which was signed by some 25 youngsters.

“The idea they have is to put a bench, slide and a swing on a small patch of green on Washford Road, close to their homes. They think it’s a good idea because it is boring for young children in the area where they live and some children are not allowed to go to the park on their own.

“The petition included a plan of where the facilities should be positioned.”

Mr Owen said he had received petitions before, but not from residents aged 11 years old.

He arranged for them to meet Gary Farmer, Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council horticultural services manager, on Tuesday, who said they would now consult with other residents.

The triplets’ mum, Helen Morgan, said: “It was just something they came up with, they decided that there’s nowhere for them to play and had upset one of our neighbours by playing with a ball in the street.

“They thought this green does not really do much and would be OK to do something with. They wrote the letter and organised the petition themselves, I was quite surprised.”
