Emergency repairs are being carried out on one of Shrewsbury’s most iconic churches after deteriorating pillars were deemed to pose a health and safety risk – and will cost at least £60,000.
Bosses at St Chad’s have also warned the cost of the work could rise as the extent of the damage won’t be known until the damaged masonry is removed.
Workmen erected scaffolding by the church’s entrance last week and started examining the masonry this week.
The church, which is the civic church of the town, has remained open while the work is being undertaken, with the cost of the repairs being met through the church’s own reserves.
It’s the latest blow for bosses at St Chad’s, who held an appeal for cash among congregation members earlier this year to pay for a new £30,000 heating system.
The church, which was built in 1792, also hosts the congregation from St John’s Methodist Church.
