The Masala is a hidden gem of Shrewsbury just off Wyle Cop. Prior to my visit I had been told that it has a reputation for the finest Indian food in Shrewsbury so I had great expectations!
On arrival, we were offered a warm welcome by John Mustafa, proprietor, who has 25 years experience in the Indian restaurant business.
A fantastic aroma of Indian spices invited you inside to the cozy restaurant, which has a pleasant décor with new carpets, which gave a fresh, clean appearance.
The Masala menu is extensive, all of which is freshly prepared to a high standard.
I opted for the Lamb Tikka and mushroom Balti priced at £6.25. The Balti originates from the frontier district and is cooked in an iron pot for a special flavour. The lamb was perfectly tender and full of flavour and a more than generous portion.
My wife chose the butter chicken priced at £6.50, this sounds a simple dish but she was pleasantly surprised with the marinated diced chicken blended with a spicy sauce. The chicken is cooked with butter, cream and almonds. The dish was perfectly prepared for my wife, mild and full of flavour.
In addition to our main course we received a complementary dish of spicy potatoes which is offered to all diners – they were simply delicious!
I would highly recommend the mushroom pilau rice at £2.25, a perfect side order to accompany any curry dish.
The Masala also offers a selection of naan breads; we chose a garlic naan and peshwari which has a sweet filling of almonds, cashews, raisins, coconut and honey, a favourite of ours.
The Masala certainly met my expectations – excellent food, service, choice and good value for money. Michael Haines
