An appeal has been made to help transport a special cargo to a Ugandan school – with town fundraisers hoping to send a sewing machine to the African country.
The Singer sewing machine belongs to 95-year-old resident Eva Moss, whose daughter Margaret West has had a school named after her in Masaka following several visits and as a thank you for funding student Danny Mutebi through university.
Staff at the school want to use the sewing machine to create new school uniforms for all the students. But the Friends of Margaret Junior School, based in Shrewsbury, are now calling for a courier to step forward to take the machine down to Heathrow Airport to be flown out to Uganda.
Mrs West travelled to Uganda in November to attend Danny’s graduation from Kampala International University, while a project to create a new school building has also been boosted by a £4,000 donation.
Mrs West said: “Sarah, the headteacher at the school, makes all the uniforms for all the pupils, but she only has a hand machine at the moment.
“The sewing machine would make a real difference, but we need someone who is taking a shipment to Heathrow to come forward and take it with them, as we have no other way of getting it down there.
“Seeing Sarah and the progress made at the school before Christmas has spurred me on to keep doing whatever we can for the school.”
