Parish council chiefs have been going round the bend after a village beauty spot was mysteriously given its own name and a formal plaque.
The curve in the road at Leighton, which overlooks the River Severn meanders, has been dubbed Bertie’s Bend, with a professional plaque attached to a bench installed by members of Leighton and Eaton Constantine Parish Council at the turn of the millennium.
But councillors have been left stunned as they don’t know who Bertie is nor who decided to name the site and erect the sign, which is visible to passing motorists.
Now parish council bosses have called for the mystery individuals to step forward, and have warned the sign could be taken down as the council owns the bench.
Malcolm Corrie, parish council chairman, said: “Six weeks ago someone put a sign up on the back of the bench calling the turns in the road Bertie’s Bend.
“We thought it was the county or borough council, but the bench actually belongs to us and as far as we are aware no permission has been given for someone to name the area and put a sign up.
“We would be interested to to find out who put the plaque up.”
