Vase plans suffer blow

Shawbury United’s plans for their big FA Vase fourth round tie at Essex Senior League side Concord Rangers on Saturday have been hit by the loss of several key players.

Defender Pat Ellis has been ruled out through injury, recent signing Stuart Cornes is cup-tied while top scorer Dave Walbyoff and Peter Smith are unavailable. Andy Webb, the ex-Ellesmere man, has left the club after a short stay.

Manager Delwyn Humphreys admits it’s not ideal being unable to field his strongest side for the biggest match in underdogs Shawbury’s history as they bid to stay on course for a dream appearance in the Wembley final.

But he’s still got plenty of faith in the players he has at his disposal as Shawbury’s 16-man squad prepare for an overnight stay in Basildon ahead of the last 32 clash in the nationwide competition at Canvey Island-based Concord.

“The players have worked hard to get to this stage and, although it’s disappointing not to have a full squad to choose from, we’re all looking forward to it,” said Humphreys, who has been told by Concord officials they’re confident the game will go ahead despite heavy rain.

“Concord will be very confident, I’m sure, as they won 12-0 last weekend while we lost at Dudley. They’re going to be a decent outfit, but hopefully they might be over-confident.

“As long as every one of our lads gives 110 per cent and does the best they can, I can’t ask for any more. Concord are clear favourites, we know that.”

Shawbury will finalise their preparations when they get together at the Albrighton Hall Hotel tonight, with Humphreys revealing he will leave it until shortly before kick-off on Saturday to decide on tactics and team selection.

Meanwhile, Shawbury have been drawn against Bridgnorth Town in the last four of the Shropshire Challenge Cup. The other tie is between Wem Town and Shifnal United 97.
