Goalkeeper Glyn Garner insists Shrewsbury Town’s play-off hopes are not over – and says the players are “buzzing for the next game” as they prepare for Saturday’s home clash against lowly Lincoln City.
Despite Town falling further behind in the race for a play-off place after collecting just a point from their trips to Grimsby and Bradford over the past week, Garner feels their overall displays merited greater reward.
And with Town determined to continue the bright, attacking displays they have produced in recent weeks, Garner believes there’s still time for the club to start climbing the League Two table.
“We were unlucky not to pick up three points at Grimsby and it was the same at Bradford,” said Garner.
“I certainly know that we’ll finish in the top half, and hopefully in the play-offs.
“The way we’re playing we can certainly go on a run. There’s a great run in us, I know there is, and I can’t wait for the next game. The boys are absolutely buzzing for the next one.”
Garner admits a repeat of Town’s opening day of the season 4-0 romp over Lincoln at Sincil Bank would do more than nicely this weekend.
But with the Imps, now managed by ex-Huddersfield chief Peter Jackson, fighting desperately to avoid relegation to the Conference, he’s expecting a much tougher afternoon.
“We bossed the game there but they’ve now got a new manager and probably a different style of play,” said the Wales international.
“We’ll work on what we can improve on in training this week but we can’t wait to play at home.
“The crowd get behind us great so let’s just rock on and climb that table.”
Garner said he was “gutted” to eventually end up on the wrong end of a 4-2 scoreline at Bradford on Tuesday night, declaring: “Bad luck just absolutely killed us off.”
But he’s still upbeat and firmly believes Town have a bright future having been impressed by the impact of new arrivals Guy Madjo, Kevin McIntyre and Asa Hall.
“There’s potential here, a lot of it,” said the ex-Leyton Orient man. “We’ve got a young side and we need to learn but there’s hope for the future.
“We’re playing some nice stuff when we get the ball, we’re spreading play well, and we’re creating chances from it.
“We’ve got to play in the right areas, the gaffer’s making people understand that, but as soon as we get in the opposition half we’ve got a licence to play and by doing that we’re creating things.
“We’ve just got to make sure we defend and give ourselves a solid base to go and attack.”
