Campaign to reclaim town streets

Circus performers and sports enthusiasts could take to town centre roads after a businessman launched a campaign to reclaim the streets of Shrewsbury during major roadworks.

John Hall, who runs the Write Here shop in High Street, has already been in touch with choirs and circus groups about performing on Dogpole and St Mary’s Street on Saturdays while the final phase of the Town Centre Enhancement Scheme is carried out. He is also hoping to attract funding from the county council’s transport department.

The town centre streets will be closed for eight weeks from April 7 to create new bus bays and to widen pavements, as revealed by the Chronicle last month. But although no work will take place on Saturdays the roads will remain closed. Transport bosses are using the scheme as a chance to trial traffic management ideas with a pedestrianised town centre.

Mr Hall said: “The plan is for youngsters to play sports or hopscotch on the road and traders will be more encouraged to open out their shops on to the streets.”  For more details ring Mr Hall on 01743 245950.
