Virginia Jones of Tanners’ new wine acadamy
Wine lovers are being given the chance to refine their palates after a new specialist academy was launched in the town.
A six-week course will run at Tanners Wines on Wyle Cop and is aimed at teaching novice wine drinkers how to taste wine and how to recognise different features of white wine, red wine and champagne from across the world. Drinks sourced from countries such as France, Germany, Chile and Australia will be tasted and studied as part of the course.
Sessions will be led by Virginia Jones, Tanners’ tastings manager. It is the first time such a course has been run by the company.
Now Tanners’ bosses are on the lookout for people to take up the places on offer before the academy launches on April 22.
The news comes after staff launched a six-week promotion to encourage people to try out organic and Fairtrade brands of wine. Customers who buy six wines from the range at Tanners will receive a free eco-friendly bag.
A spokesman for Tanners said: “The sight of all these bottles can be daunting for the novice wine drinker who is presented with champagne and sparkling wines, whites and reds from the new world and old world.
“We have decided to offer additional help and advice in the form of a brand new wine academy.
“At the end of the course the students will have learned about how and where wine is made, different grape varieties and styles of wine and how to understand a wine label.
“They will also have enjoyed the opportunity to try a great range of different wines under expert guidance.”
The six week course is aimed at complete beginners and costs £159 per person. Anyone interested should call Rodney Holloway at Tanners on 01743 234455.
