Fight to save post offices

Fury is mounting in communities throughout the area with a series of petitions and meetings planned to fight proposed post office closures.

The announcement was made on Tuesday that ten post office branches in the area would close – with a replacement mobile service to be introduced for some.

Angry residents affected by the plans have vowed to fight the decision with the full backing of town councillors. Shrewsbury MP Daniel Kawczynski has said he would invite post office officials to visit the branches affected with him.

Those at All Stretton, Ditherington, Greenfields and Harmer Hill will close, while those in Acton Burnell, Cressage, Hadnall, Montford Bridge, Snailbeach and Worthen will be replaced by mobile services.

A six-week consultation period with the public has begun and some residents in Hadnall have already launched a petition, with many more planned.

County councillor Roger Evans said he would fight the closure of the Greenfields branch which serves an ever-increasing population.

“With the change of the town’s main office into WH Smith and the subsequent access and queuing issues, we need a PO like the one at Greenfields even more.”

Also fighting for survival is Ditherington Post Office, which serves up to 1,000 people a week.

Councillor Alan Mosley is urging residents in the area to write letters to post office officials. A protest meeting is also being arranged.

County councillors Malcolm Pate and John Hurst-Knight were due to meet with post office officials today.

Council leader Malcolm Pate said: “We will do everything we can to support communities affected by these proposed closures.”
