New specialist care home

A specialist 72-bed care home to treat people suffering from dementia and Alzheimer’s disease is set to be built on the site of a village farm after a deal was struck to sell the land.

The nursing care home, which will be run by European Care Ltd, will be on the site of The Oaklands in Hanwood to cater for patients within a five-mile radius.

The existing farm buildings and house will be demolished to make way for the state-of-the art facility.

A planning application to build the home is expected to be submitted by Oswestry-based developers J.R. Pickstock within the next few weeks.

It is hoped the home will start taking its first patients in 2010.

Residents are being invited to view the proposals at a consultation meeting in the extension meeting room at the village’s St Thomas Church on Monday from 2pm until 6.30pm.

Officials set to be present on Monday include David Perry, vice chairman of European Care Group, architect Chris Turnbull from Turnbull Tweedale and Andrew Locke from planning consultants Kembertons.  Detailed plans for the home will also be on show.

An agreement was reached between the landowners and European Care Ltd officials after weeks of discussions, although it has not been revealed how much the land was sold for nor how much the new care home would cost to build.

It has been claimed the new facility would go a long way towards meeting the need for the services in the area.

Mr Locke said: “The facility will specialise in treating Alzheimer’s and dementia patients, and there will be 72 single-occupancy rooms.

“It will be built on where the farm house lies now and will take at least a year to build.

“It should be open in 2010.”
