Rail information centre closed

The information centre at one of the gateways to Shrewsbury has been closed due to staffing shortages – with bosses admitting they don’t know when it will re-open.

Passengers coming into the town by train have been unable to access the information centre at the town’s railway station since it was closed on April 14 after a member of staff left.

Although a sign on the windows claims the venue has been closed temporarily for three weeks, no date has yet been set to re-open the centre and no new members of staff have been appointed.

Arriva Trains Wales officials claim two members of staff are needed to run the facility, and have said the centre would re-open only part-time.

Rail users can get information from the station ticket office, although staff in the office have to prioritise selling tickets.

The news comes after rail users have had to use coaches to travel to Mid Wales due to works on the Cambrian line.

Railway enthusiasts have hit out at the development, claiming the town needs accessible information points to help encourage tourists to visit.

Russell Mulford, president of Shropshire Railway Society, said: “It puts a lot of pressure on the people selling tickets at the station.

“When Arriva Trains Wales took over the franchise they talked about Shrewsbury being an important hub in their operations.

“For a town like Shrewsbury not to have a rail information centre is very bad.”

Maggie Abbett, press spokesperson for Arriva Trains Wales, said: “Information is available from the booking office, but we are actively recruiting for new staff. We regret we have had to close the information office but we haven’t got the staff to run it.”
