Davies joy - but injury woe for duo

There was a mixture of success and misfortune for some of Shrewsbury Motocross Club’s leading riders in the qualification rounds for the AMCA British Championship.

While comeback star Gary Davies enjoyed a successful outing, two other riders were injured in separate incidents.

The opening round of the MX1 series took place at Long Lane, near Wellington, and Davies virtually assured qualification for the Championship as he took first overall.

The 11-times national champion took two wins on the day and, despite a minor collision with a backmarker,  took second in the final race.

The final race saw a lengthy delay when Shrewsbury’s Lee Jones crashed heavily and required medical assistance. Jones had been running just outside the top eight qualification places when he fell, suffering a broken collarbone and ribs, along with a leg injury.

Also in action in MX1 was Frank Evans, who in his first ever attempt at qualifying for the championship finished 10th with one round  to go.

The MX2 class qualification concluded on Sunday at Branston, near Burton. After a hectic day, Shrewsbury’s Dan Cole finished just outside the top eight qualification places, taking ninth overall after two rounds.

However, Cole is likely to feature in the series as a reserve, along with Phil Lloyd, who rose to 10th overall after Sunday’s meeting which was marred by a freak accident involving young Ryan Jones.

He had been looking likely to qualify but was hit by another rider. Jones was taken to hospital with a broken jaw, which looks likely to keep the youngster off the circuit for some time.
