Staff at an Indian restaurant have teamed up with Red Cross officials and business leaders in a bid to help victims of the Burma cyclone.
A series of 18-course buffets are being put in by staff at the Shalimar Restaurant on Abbey Foregate in aid of the Myanmar (Burma) Cyclone Appeal.
There will be a special function and charity auction on Tuesday, May 27, with buffets also being served on Wednesday and Thursday.
Restaurant owner Martin Kabir said he had been prompted to act after the Asian country was hit by Cyclone Nargis on May 2, killing thousands of people and wiping out whole villages.
Now organisers are calling for people to book tables for the week, with diners encouraged to enjoy a buffet meal for a donation of their choice.
Posters and charity boxes have been supplied by members of the Red Cross based in Shrewsbury, while Shropshire Chamber of Commerce chiefs have thrown their support behind the event.
Ian Musty, local fundraising manager for the Red Cross, said: “As Myanmar has a Red Cross Society, we had 17,000 volunteers helping on day one of the emergency and so we can assure people that donations will be used where most needed.
“I’m so grateful to Martin and his team at the Shalimar for his incredibly generous offer, and to Tony Randall and the Shropshire Chamber for encouraging their contacts to help make these evenings a success.
“This is a great chance for lovers of Indian food to have a lovely meal and at the same time raise money for people who are desperate.”
Mr Randall, president of Shropshire Chamber of Commerce and managing director of the Heritage Glass Group in Shrewsbury, said: “I’m delighted to offer my personal support and the Chamber’s support to this most worthy appeal and I wish them every success.
“The Shropshire Chamber is also actively looking to support this initiative.”
