Vegetable firm looks at carbon footprint

An organic vegetable company with clients throughout the town has unveiled a new website for customers to find out more about its carbon footprint.

Riverford delivers freshly-picked seasonal vegetables, as well as meat, dairy and other organic produce, to the doors of customers throughout the county.

In an effort to ensure the business is as green as possible, the new website will let shoppers find out about the carbon emissions associated with sourcing the vegetables.

Bosses hope the website will trigger debate about its findings as well as providing a rich source of information to customers and the wider public. It will also feature research carried out over a two-year period into the effects that growing, packaging and distribution have on the environment.

Lee Proudfoot, who delivers Riverford boxes in and around the town, said: “We know our customers want to make informed choices about how they shop and eat, so we believe that we are the first in our industry to have developed a carbon calculator‚ to tell them about the carbon emissions associated with sourcing the vegetables.

“There are no easy answers and we are committed to continually researching our impact on the environment.

“Our customers have always been able to know where our produce is sourced, and we believe that the website is a further example of our innovative, open and honest approach to growing and selling organic food.”
