Post office campaign

Three more village post offices could be saved after Post Office bosses pledged to discuss plans to help keep the services running.

Branches at Hadnall, Worthen and Montford Bridge could all remain open as part of either a partnership service or hosted service by linking up with existing retail outlets.

Negotiations between Post Office officials and potential businesses are on-going with decisions to be made after the end of the formal consultation period on Monday, June 9.

It’s a boost for the Chronicle’s The Last Post? campaign following last week’s announcement of a deal to save Acton Burnell Post Office.

Mike Dalton, Post Office spokesman, said: “We have a similar position to Acton Burnell with Hadnall, Worthen and Montford Bridge. We will be looking to have a similar type of arrangement in these communities, but no agreement has been reached yet.

“The level of hours we are suggesting these post offices should be available for, could be well served by a partnership or hosted service arrangement.

“We have been actively looking for other types of arrangements with little success to date, but this doesn’t mean things can’t change.”

Clive Gant, postmaster at Montford Bridge Post Office, said he would be meeting with an advisor on Monday to discuss the option of having a hosted service in his shop.

He said: “Initially we thought that we couldn’t afford to do it, but we’re considering the idea that I will go out to work and a member of staff will work in the shop, probably with a couple of other members of staff.”

Shrewsbury MP Daniel Kawczynski said: “I will not rest until we’ve given it our best shot at trying to save all the local branches.”
