Outlet to cut stock and resize

A large office and stationery outlet in Shrewsbury could soon be split in half after plans were unveiled to lease part of the building out to another firm.

Ian Wilson, store manager of Staples in Sundorne Retail Park, said the chain wanted to reduce the size of the store as part of a new strategy.

He said no job losses would be incurred as a result of the move but said some stock lines would be lost.

It comes as a planning application was submitted to Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council for the installation of 648 sqm of mezzanine sales floor together with new entrances, means of escape and service access.

The applicants Prudential Property Investment Managers Ltd, said the application was in preparation for ‘future opportunities’ at the site.

A spokeswoman for the firm said no decisions had yet been made over which business would be operating from the premises.

Mr Wilson said the changes to the store were expected to be in place by the end of the summer.

He said: “I am not aware of the whole plans but I do have a rough idea of what we are doing.

“The planning application might not be for us as I think we are splitting the store in two. Part of it might be leased out to another store.

“I just think it is a strategic thing, basically we’ll halve the premises as there is a lot of redundant space.

“We will retain the same amount of stuff but some lines could potentially be reduced. We hope to have it done by August or September time.”

A decision on the application by PPIM is expected to be made by borough planners by July 18.
