PO to be saved by postmistress

A popular village post office earmarked for closure could be saved if Post Office bosses give a neighbouring postmistress the green light to host the service.

Montford Bridge Post Office is one of 11 branches in Shrewsbury facing the chop as part of a national cash-saving programme.

A mobile bus was initially proposed to replace the service in a lay-by off a busy stretch of the B4380 for four days a week – but sub-postmaster Clive Gant has since been in talks with Post Office Limited to discuss the option  of having the service run by Shawbury postmistress Jane Piesse for 12 hours a week.

She has run Shawbury Post Office for the past four years and, if proposals go ahead, she may be running three hosted services at West Felton, Montford Bridge and Hadnall.

Mr Gant said the hosted service was far better than a mobile bus in a lay-by.

A spokesperson for the Post Office said: “Post Office Ltd has not yet reached final decisions on the proposals but an announcement is due in the next couple of weeks.”

Town MP Daniel Kawczynski, who yesterday presented a petition of more than 900 signatures to the Government on behalf of Greenfields Post Office, said: “Anything that would help to ensure that the post office service remains in Montford Bridge should be valued and considered.
