Shrewsbury’s town centre park has won the Green Flag award, which is a way of encouraging boroughs to achieve high environmental standards.

The success follows a visit to the area by two judges, who were shown around by members of the Shrewsbury in Bloom committee.

They also evaluated all aspects of the management and maintenance of the area, including whether it was a welcoming place, safe, clean and encouraged community involvement.

Derek Caddy, public amenities manager, for Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council, said the award demonstrated that residents are offered a year round facility for leisure and recreation where they can enjoy the beautiful park and sunken garden in the Dingle.

“This success on top of last year’s Britain in Bloom and International Communities in Bloom/Entente Florale awards shows a community that is constantly looking for improvements for its residents and visitors,” he said.

grow-your-own-logo2.jpgCouncillor Judith Williams, portfolio holder for recycling and horticulture, said: “On behalf of the council we are delighted to receive this award and we would like to thank all the staff for keeping the facility in an excellent condition.”

The borough council will receive the award at a ceremony on Thursday, July 24, in Liverpool.
