Long-serving councillor retires

A long-serving county and borough councillor, and former mayor of Shrewsbury, has said she is stepping down from her role ahead of the move to a unitary authority.

eileenaw2.jpgConservative councillor Eileen Sandford, for the Harlescott ward, has been involved with local government since 1983, but has decided that the time is right to retire.

The 85-year-old said she had made the decision to go when the new unitary council comes into being next year. “I’m always best known for abseiling down the Column, which is a pity because I have done a lot of other activities.”

She believes her biggest achievements were the construction of the community centre in Harlescott and getting a fence along Ellesmere Road.

Cllr Sandford said she was looking forward to receiving less correspondence in her retirement but had no intention of ‘taking it easy’.

She will continue as county and borough councillor until the elections for the new unitary council take place at a date to be decided.
