Tom revs up race hopes

A talented Shrewsbury track racer is cruising his way to success after only his second season of racing, writes RUTH TAYLOR.

tom5.jpgTom Meehan, 27, from Monkmoor, is delighted with his performances so far after making the change from Motocross to road racing.

The personal fitness instructor has been racing for the first time this year in the Derby Phoenix Club National Championship on his 2008 Yamaha R6.

The 600cc, 121 brake horse power bike is so far serving him well and he  lies fourth in the championship with every hope of being able to improve and make a top three finish by the end of the season.

Tom has been racing at tracks such as Donnington Park, Brands Hatch, Cadwell Park, Anglesea, Oulton Park and Snetterton in two day events which are made up of short sprint races of just 10 laps.

He said: “My goal is to finish well this season, progress further up the ranks and to use what race craft I have learnt this year.

“I want to keep progressing to a higher level and get better and better. I love racing and I am very competitive - you get a huge adrenalin rush from beating people.

“I have crashed a few times but luckily it was at relatively slow speeds and so I wasn’t hurt.

“I dislocated my shoulder earlier in the year but that’s fine now.

“My highest finish in a race has been third at Brands Hatch, but I narrowly missed out on a second last week at Donnington.”
