Gift aid cheque for cancer centre

Chronicle readers and Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling pushed our cancer centre appeal past the fantastic milestone of £2.5 million.

A £25,000 cheque from Gift Aid from the Treasury for tax relief on donations helped us reach the latest Lingen Davies Appeal milestone and nearer our goal of £3.2 million to build a dedicated facility for cancer patients at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

“We’re absolutely delighted,” said Eryl Williams, fundraising manager. “We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has helped to raise this tremendous amount of money, however large or small their contribution.

“And our special thanks to the Shrewsbury Chronicle and its readers for their valued support. Although we have a further £700,000 to raise before we can start to build the new cancer centre, it would be really wonderful if we could reach the £3 million milestone by our 30th anniversary next year.”

The cancer centre appeal kicked off in January 2004 to build a much-needed extension to the chemotherapy department where the waiting room has had to be turned into a treatment area.

The building will also house an improved ward for head and neck patients, and a larger haematology clinic.
