‘More to come’ - Davies

Influential captain Ben Davies believes there’s plenty more to come from his Shrewsbury Town high fliers as he targets three points at slow starters Morecambe on Saturday.

Davies, a key figure in Town’s exciting start to the season, knows it’s still early days but the midfielder is highly encouraged by what he’s seen.

Now back to his best after the injury problems which dogged him last season, Davies is enjoying his football and being on the winning side on a regular basis.

“Winning games brings confidence,” he said. “You look forward to coming in, you’ve got a spring in your step and let’s just hope we can keep it going.

“We’ve got a massive game now against Morecambe which we’ll be looking to win so roll on Saturday.

“We’re sitting second in the league and haven’t lost a game. The Carling Cup was obviously disappointing for us but we went to Exeter on Tuesday in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy and won again so we’re delighted. I definitely think there’s more to come. We’ve got a lot of new players this season and we’re just starting to click.

“We’ve got to try and stay where we are in the table, look to try and get to 10 games and still be there, then 20 games and so on.

“And if we can stay up there at around Christmas time, then we’ve got a great chance of pushing on and doing really well.”

Davies is excited by the potential of the squad assembled by boss Paul Simpson, stressing it is packed with quality.

“This is as good a squad as I’ve been involved in,” said the ex-Chester man. “You’ve got experienced lads, players who are good on the ball, quick lads, so we’ve got a mixture of everything. We’re also scoring goals from set pieces which is important.”

“I had been getting closer and closer and been disappointed not to have scored before,” he said. “I was pleased to get one and it earned us a great win.

“It shows how strong the squad is as the average age of the side at Exeter was young and they only made one change to their team, but we scored two good goals worthy of winning any game.”

Davies is now gunning for Morecambe this weekend when he hopes to put one over on his good friend Stewart Drummond, the man he succeeded as Town skipper.

“I’m looking forward to seeing him,” he added. “I’ve always got on well with Drums and played alongside him for a few years, but hopefully we’ll go there and get three points off him and his team.”

Morecambe, who have picked up just a point from their first four league games, are also likely to include ex-Town loan men Dave Artell and Neil Wainwright in their side.
