A closer look at police

An American-style police engagement programme has been launched to give the public the chance to spend time with officers and see exactly what the force does.

The initiative, taking place throughout the county, will initially allow residents in and around Shrewsbury to get up close and personal with different departments.

The first group to be given the opportunity consists of 25 people who will attend a series of classes, discussions and tours one evening a week for 10 weeks.

Other agencies such as Shropshire Fire and Rescue and Trading Standards will also take some of the sessions.

Superintendent Gary Higgins, of Shropshire Division, said the programme formed part of West Mercia Constabulary’s Citizen Focus priorities.

“The concept of such ‘academies’ originated in Britain in the 1970s, but while we seem to have stopped running them, police forces in America have embraced the idea where they are fully integrated into everyday policing,” he said.

“We have done a lot of research and are very keen to bring something similar back into British policing with the Community Engagement Programme, initially putting the focus on those over the age of 55.”

The course aims to open up communication between community groups and the police, and it is hoped those who attend will then be able to pass on their experiences and increased knowledge to the rest of their community.

Participants will take part in a ‘graduation’ ceremony and if the pilot project proves a success, it may be expanded to include other sections of the community and further courses.
