Sports star double for school

A nine-year-old who dreams of the Olympics and a 12-year-old who competes in five different events have brought double sporting success to their Shrewsbury school.

Olivia Poole, nine, from Dorrington, and Jack Fielding, 12, from Condover, both emerged as champions in separate events over the weekend and were guests of honour at a celebratory assembly in front of fellow pupils at Shrewsbury High Prep School this week.

Olivia, whose dream is to ride in the Olympic Games, won the under 10s section for the national show jumping competition held in Preston at the weekend.

Her dad, Colin, said Olivia has been riding for four years and has been riding competitively for the last 18 months.

“I’m very proud of her, hopefully it will be the first of many titles for her,” he said.

“Her goal when she was five was to ride for Great Britain in the Olympics.”

Olivia’s next step will be competing in show jumping events in Scotland and England later this month.

Jack joined the West Midlands Modern Pentathlon Association last year and took part in the regional triathlon championships in Birmingham at the weekend.

He achieved the best run, and best shoot, and was crowned overall champion.

His mum, Lou Fielding, said she was delighted at his success and that of his younger brother Freddie, 9, who also took part in the challenge.

“He does the pentathlon which is shooting, running, swimming, fencing and show jumping, I’m very pleased, they’re both brilliant and work really hard.”

Jack will be in the British Triathlon Championships in Wolverhampton in November.

A school spokesman said: “We’re very proud of them both, it’s fantastic and the staff and pupils wish them luck in their next championships.”
