Protest over riverside homes

More than 200 letters have been distributed to town residents as part of a campaign to stop five executive homes being built on a picturesque site next to the River Severn.

The letters have been circulated by members of Pengrove Residents Association, who are fighting plans to build five five-bedroom executive homes on land at Pengrove, Kingsland, near to the old brewery in Longden Coleham.

The scheme, submitted by developers GC Rickards, includes boat moorings as well as car access, but residents have raised concerns at the potential loss of green space and the detrimental impact on wildlife.

This is the second time that the developers have submitted housing plans for the land and earlier in the year they withdrew their application for the development of four seven-bedroom houses and four five-bedroom houses.

A public exhibition is to be held on Monday, October 13, at the Barnabas Church Centre, Longden Coleham, in the Hulbert Room from 2pm to 7pm. Detailed plans of the development will be displayed and planning consultants and representatives of Aedas architects will answer questions.

Residents have until Thursday, October 16, to register their views with Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council.

The Campaign to Protect Rural England has objected over concerns that the houses will impact on the look of the area and in a letter to the council, Shrewsbury Town Residents Association raised concerns about the loss of open space.

It states: “Our river-scape as seen from the town centre, one of Shrewsbury’s great assets, demands protection, and this collection of buildings would be a grave mistake.”

Les Stephan, for GC Rickards, said: “The houses are eco-friendly, have a low carbon footprint and are of a modern design. They will have underground floor heating and rain water harvesting and the houses have been designed to take advantage of the riverside location.

“The public footpath that crosses the site across the river is not affected in any way and there will be a provision for boat moorings if residents wish to take advantage of it.”
