Internet cafe idea could be scrapped

An idea to launch a village internet café could be scrapped if more people don’t show their support.

A survey to see if people in Hanwood would be interested in the service has so far had only three responses despite around 550 forms being sent out with the Hanwood and Cruckton Herald.

Bob Scott, editor, said he hoped that more people would express a wish to see a community internet facility as he had been approached by a number of residents who said they did not possess a computer and wanted to see internet access provided at a central location in the village.

Mr Scott said: “We decided to use the newsletter to gauge public support for the idea but we have had a very poor response. With the re-opening of the Cock Inn and the landlord’s desire to become a community hub we thought it might be a good place to put a computer in there.

“We have a good village website with lots of local and national links to information which it would be good if everyone could get access to. Such a facility would also be accompanied by training which I could provide for residents.”

“We missed out on the Broadplace funding which saw many villages able to set up their own internet and computer access.”

Tracey Cox, manager of the Cock Inn, said: “We would have to think more about this idea. Our main concerns are the cost of the computers and who would be responsible for any breakages.

“It is a possibility but I’m not sure if people want this or not. We also need to think about where they would go in the pub.’

Residents who have not returned their survey forms should do so as soon as possible to Mr Scott, Hanwood and Cruckton Herald, 59 Caradoc View, Hanwood.

The Hanwood and Cruckton Herald website is now at a new address of http://hch.shropshire-west.net
