College denies claims to contract

Bosses from a Shrewsbury college have firmly denied claims that a £60 million contract to build the co-located post-16 colleges on London Road has already been awarded to a firm.

News appeared on industry website Glenigan.com stating that London-based company BAM Construct UK had secured the contract ahead of planning approval being granted.

A special meeting is due to be held at the Music Hall on Monday (November 3), to make a decision about whether the town’s two colleges should be moved on to one site.

Planning officers have recommended the scheme for approval.  The website says: “BAM Construct UK (formerly HBG Construction) are waiting for planning permission before going ahead with construction.

“HBG Construction Ltd has been awarded the main contract for the construction of new buildings at Shrewsbury College of Arts and Technology.”

A spokesperson for BAM Construct UK said: “We are in discussions about this contract and we’re very hopeful.

“We’re very good at winning these sorts of contracts and I would be surprised if we didn’t as we’re the biggest college builder in the UK.”

A spokesperson for Shrewsbury College of Arts and Technology, said: “This is absolutely untrue. No contracts have been awarded.

“With regard to the main contractors, formerly HBG – now BAM Construct UK – they have the status of preferred bidder – but there is no contractual obligation with them and they remain on a speculative basis until the commencement of the second stage process which would have to be agreed following a positive planning decision.”
