Jen’s Autumn Fair

Organisers of an autumn fair held in honour of a close friend who died of cancer have raised almost £1,000 for charity after a ‘very successful’ day.

Jen’s Autumn Fair at Radbrook Community Centre on Saturday was dedicated to the memory of Jen Crick, who died in January, aged 58, after a ten-year battle with the disease. And members of the community rallied round by turning out on the day and by making donations to raise £935.

The cash will be split between Marie Curie Cancer and the Severn Hospice, where Jen was cared for before she died.

Attractions on the day included a tombola run by members of the Severn Hospice’s Meole Brace support group, bric-a-brac, cakes and plant stalls. Refreshments were served by staff at Cafe Connect.

Those behind the day have praised everyone involved for their support, and are hoping to hold more events in the New Year in memory of their friend to help others fighting cancer.

Jen was born with cerebral palsy but was known for her ‘positive’ outlook on life. She met her husband John when she was 17 while babysitting for a friend of Mr Crick’s, and the pair were married for 33 years.

Maureen Bradley, a close family friend and one of the organisers of the fair, said: “It was a very successful day – we had lots of people turn out who came along and supported us while lots of people who couldn’t come made cash donations.

“We all felt we wanted to do something as Jen was such a well-known and well-liked person in the community and we wanted to give something back to help others.

“It’s the first event we have held but we are hoping to do something next year. We will probably come up with some ideas soon but we haven’t all got together to discuss it yet.”
