When 44-year old Dovey Llewellyn was diagnosed with an incurable form of bone cancer earlier this year he thought he’d never make his wedding day.
Five months later Dovey was walking down the aisle with his new wife, defying his doctor’s prognosis that he would not be well enough to attend.
In March this year, Dovey, of Minsterley, was diagnosed with myeloma cancer – a cancer which starts in the bone marrow and attacks the bones making them brittle.
Dovey has since had to give up his job on a nearby organic dairy farm after 13 years.
But on September 6 the couple tied the knot in a small ceremony at Holy Trinity Church, Hope, with some relatives travelling halfway around the world to celebrate the occasion.
Newtown Male Voice Choir were invited to sing on the day and they have now been called upon to perform again at the church on Saturday at a special concert to raise funds in appreciation of the care Dovey received.
Proceeds will be split among Macmillan Nurses, the Haematology Day Unit at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and the church.
Jackie, Dovey’s wife, said: “We’d already sent out our wedding invitations and the doctor said to cancel the wedding, because Dovey was not going to be fit enough.
“Two months before the wedding Dovey underwent a stem cell transplant at Birmingham Hospital and he was feeling a lot better. By August we knew things were going well and we thought let’s go for it and get married.”
Dovey, who is now in remission, said: “It was a bit of a shock earlier in the year.
“But the support and treatment I’ve had from the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital has been excellent. For this reason, my wife and I thought we’d like to raise money towards the haematology unit.”
The concert, which also features the Rapsquillion choir, starts at Holy Trinity Church in Hope at 7.30pm. Tickets costing £6 are available on the door, at Bent Lont Post Office, The Stables Inn Pub or by contacting Mr Llewellyn on 01743 891445.
