Collapsed bridge chaos

A collapsed historic bridge will not be fully restored until 2010, with angry residents turning to their MP in a bid to find a solution.

It had been hoped work would get under way to repair the 1830s bridge at Sheinton in the coming weeks.

But, in an email to parish clerk Derek Shaw just hours before a meeting of Cressage, Harley and Sheinton Parish Council on Tuesday, John Williams, of Shropshire County Council, said due to weather conditions and ‘necessary consent’ the bridge would not be rebuilt until April 2010.

Parish councillor Jill Duffield said she had also been told that a temporary bridge would not be available until the middle of January.

Members of the parish council are now writing to MP Daniel Kawczynski about residents’ concerns and they are encouraging others to do the same.

More than 30 residents attended the meeting to voice their concerns over the disruption caused by the bridge collapse last month.

Issues raised included the extra fuel costs and travel times with some claiming their travel bills are now £45 per month higher.

Concerns were brought up about possible restricted access for emergency services and the lack of communication from officials.

Ceila Davies, from Sheinton, said she had to send her 14-year-old daughter to school by taxi every day as the bus cannot get through.

Councillor Duffield said: “The main thing is that two thirds of Sheinton turned up to show how distressed they are and they travelled the 14 miles to give their views that life is pretty hard and they are fed up.”
