A restricted parking zone, preventing football fans from leaving cars outside residents’ homes during Shrewsbury Town home matches, has come into force.
From last Monday, December 1, only residents and visitors with parking permits can park on roads on the Sutton Farm estate, near to the Prostar Stadium, on match days.
And those who choose to park in the area without a permit have been warned they will be ticketed, with street patrols to be carried out during games.
The scheme will face it’s first test on Saturday when the Shrews host Rotherham at 3pm in Coca Cola League Two.
It has been introduced by Shropshire County Council, Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council and Shrewsbury Town Football Club and is aimed at ‘indiscriminate’ parking by football fans. Traffic signs will be set up warning people they are entering the restricted zone.
The zones were offered to a number of estates in the vicinity of the ground earlier this year, but residents in Sutton Farm were the only ones to vote to adopt the plan.
Football fans have been encouraged to use bus services to the stadium which run from the Oxon and Harlescott Park & Ride sites, Shirehall and Shrewsbury bus station.
John Everall, Shropshire County Council’s cabinet member for environment and sustainability, said: “We have introduced this scheme following requests from Sutton Farm residents. We hope that these measures will help prevent the high volume of supporter parking in these streets during matches.
Keith Sayfritz, vice chairman of Shrewsbury Town Football Club and chairman of parking liaison group, said: “The concept of controlled parking zones was unanimously agreed by all members of the liaison group and following consultation in residential areas surrounding the stadium was adopted by the residents of Sutton Farm.”
