Charity hit with waste bill

The paper that gets results…

A charity has saved up to £1,600 – thanks to the Shrewsbury Chronicle.

Last week we revealed that Meals on Wheels had been hit with an annual charge of £1,600 for waste collection when the new unitary council starts. (See page 2 of this article)

But after an internal investigation it was clarified that charities will have to pay only £62.40 as an annual fee – not a fortnightly cost as suggested by a ‘misleading letter’.

Councillor Tony Durnell, on the Shropshire Waste Partnership committee, said: “I’m glad the Chronicle brought it up because it means we have been able to address it. The letter was misleading.”

A spokesman for Meals on Wheels thanked the paper and said it was very good news.
