Architect flown in to fix model

Bosses behind plans for a £60 million incinerator at Battlefield had to fly in an architect from France to repair a scale model of the plant just days before a public exhibition.

The model, which was used as part of a three-day exhibition run by Veolia Environmental Services from last Thursday to Saturday, was delivered from France in advance.

But when the model arrived it was found a number of sections had come away from the base – and organisers promptly flew in an employee of French architects S’Pace from Paris to fix it.

The design took its place at the exhibition last Thursday at Battlefield Recycling Centre and for the next two days at The Lantern in Sundorne, which attracted around 250 residents.

It has not been revealed whether Veolia or the architects had to foot the bill for the late call-out. A formal planning application for the controversial facility was submitted on Tuesday afternoon, around 15 months after the plans were first unveiled.

It is not known when the application will be considered by a planning committee. Catherine Slaytor, press officer for Veolia, said: “The model was delivered to us last week and it was slightly damaged in transit. It needed mending as a number of buildings had become detached from the base.”

Simon Alton, spokesman for Shropshire County Council, said: “We hope the planning application will be available to be viewed by the public next week.”
