Experts called in on ancient remains

An investigation will be carried out into historical remains unearthed on a town estate – potentially delaying plans to build five homes.

Discussions are taking place over the site at Oak Street Head in Belle Vue to determine the nature of the remains and how important they are. County archaeologist Mike Watson is investigating the history of the site.

Planning agent Les Stephan said amended plans would be re-submitted to build the homes, but added any work could be delayed to allow on-site investigations.

A previous planning application in 1992 discovered the remains which are believed to date back from the Iron Age and Roman times.

Concerns have been raised about how to protect the site, which led to the first planning application being withdrawn a few weeks ago.

Les Stephan, of Les Stephan Planning Ltd, said: “I have been discussing the matter with Mike Watson and we can either allow access to investigate the remains when development takes place or we may have to protect parts of the site where they don’t want any development to take place.

“The alternative may be that to satisfy the archaeologist we may have to do some investigations on the site before we submit any further applications.”
