More than 7,000 leaflets about the controversial Battlefield incinerator are being distributed around town homes – sparking anger among campaigners.
The leaflets, designed by Veolia Environmental Services, have been sent out in the Harlescott area ahead of the launch of the official consultation period on plans for the facility in the next few weeks.
But members of the Safe Waste in Shropshire group have reacted angrily to the mass distribution. Last year the group was not allowed to distribute its own leaflets in council run venues such as The Lantern. The news comes ahead of MEP Liz Lynne’s visit to the town tomorrow, Friday, to meet campaign members at the Battlefield site from 1.10pm.
SWS members will also be welcoming Professor Paul Connett to Alington Hall at Shrewsbury School next Friday, March 27, as part of their campaign to stop the incinerator being built.
Alan Goater, SWS member, said: “We were stopped from exhibiting our own information leaflets last year.
“We have been waiting for the consultation period to start and it looks like the county council has been waiting for these leaflets to be sent out before the process begins.”
Catherine Slaytor, press officer for Veolia, said the company was distributing the leaflets, which were on view at an exhibition at The Lantern in January, to ensure as many people as possible were aware of the application.
Simon Alton, press spokesman for Shropshire County Council, said: “We have made the application available to view on the county council’s website in the last few weeks, since the proposed development was received and validated, and we will shortly be starting the formal consultation period.”
