Vodafone bosses want to build telecommunications masts at three more locations around Shrewsbury – bringing the total in the town to five.
The mobile phone giant has submitted planning applications to build base stations in Monkmoor at the junction of Clive Road and Monkmoor Road, on land at the Red Barn pub in Longden Road and on land at Oteley Road.
The company says the radio base stations are needed to improve the 3G coverage.
But the applications have provoked fury. Former borough councillor for Porthill, Judith Williams, said she was extremely let down by the company’s decision.
She said: “I am just so disappointed that after a huge amount of lobbying and protests from residents and meetings in the House of Commons with our MP, Vodafone just seems to thumb its nose at people.”
Dr Rob Matthews, spokesperson for Vodafone, said: “Radio base stations are low power devices and only cover a small distance, approximately half a mile in radius, and therefore, we need a number of base stations to cover a town such as Shrewsbury.” The masts adhered to guidelines backed by independent bodies such as the World Health Organisation, he added.
