Floral displays set to return

Popular hanging baskets look set to  return to the English Bridge almost a year after they were removed amid health and safety fears.

The floral displays have hung on the bridge since the 1970s, but were removed to allow repairs to be carried out to stonework.

In August, the Chronicle reported that the former Shropshire County Council, which owned and managed the bridge, had made the decision to remove the baskets on all the lampstands because they were deemed unstable. The cost of masonry repairs was estimated at around £3,500.

The maintenance of floral displays  now rests with the new Shrewsbury Town Council which came in to being yesterday, Wednesday.

Residents are delighted the baskets will  return in time for the 122nd Shrewsbury Flower Show in the summer.

Judith Williams, of the Shrewbury In Bloom committee, said the baskets had been missed.

She said: “I’m just very pleased that SCC have enabled us to use the baskets again and that will guarantee us a magnificent show as always. It looked quite bleak before.”

Resident James Gollins added: “I think the bridge looks a lot better when the flowers are there. It is one of the gateways to the town, so we’ve got to have it looking the part.”

Philip Edwards, former SCC street lighting officer, said: “We have refurbished some of the stonework and street lights on the English Bridge and we expect the hanging baskets to be in situ for the Flower Show.”
