Pregnant women in the developing world are getting a helping hand from a school in Wem which is providing training for midwives.
Thomas Adams School is working with a non-profit making initiative based in Canada to train local women in Kenya in postnatal care to reduce infection in newborns.
Fire and Ice will organise training while Thomas Adams will play its part by finding Kenyan volunteers and venues for the courses.
Dave Queen, from Thomas Adams, said: “The idea is to train a small group of locally experienced midwives who have lots of practical experience with the medical science and knowledge that they lack.”
A team of six students and staff will also be heading out to Kenya from Wem in July to help get a water tank built, develop the midwife training and begin a small crop project for orphan students.
Mr Queen added: “If we can train even as few as five local midwives, they in turn can pass on their training to far less qualified women.”
