Four seats won by default

A total of 31 candidates will be standing for a seat on Shrewsbury Town Council when elections take place next month – with four hopefuls already sure of a place.

Voters will go to the polls for the new authority, which will be one of the biggest town councils in the country, on June 4.

Conservative party candidates David Farmer, Kath Owen, Keith Roberts and former SABC leader Peter Nutting will all be elected to the new council for their respective wards by default as they are the only people standing in their areas.

There are 17 wards up for grabs across the town council area which extends from Harlescott and Battlefield in the north, to Meole Brace and Sutton in the south, and between Monkmoor in the east and Bowbrook in the west.

A host of members of the former Shrewsbury and Atcham Borough Council are hoping to win a place on the new authority including Conservative Judith Williams and Liberal Democrat Anne Chebsey who will contest the Porthill ward, while Labour candidate Liz Parsons and Tory Jackie Brennand will compete for the right to represent the Column ward.

Meanwhile, James Gollins is hoping to win a seat as a member of the Albion Party when he takes on Conservative Andrew Wagner for the Quarry and Coton Hill ward.

More than 200 candidates are bidding for a seat on the new unitary Shropshire Council as well. There are nominations for the Shrewsbury divisions from the main political parties but also smaller ones too including the UK Independence, Green and British National parties who are seeking to win one the 74 seats available.

In some of the areas there will be a contest for two seats, while in the Bayston Hill, Column and Sutton division three seats will be up for grabs.
