MP expenses to be revealed

Expenses claimed by town MP Daniel Kawczynski and his fellow county MPs will be officially published next week amid growing scandal at Westminster.

Mr Kawczynski, who has insisted his own finances are ‘beyond reproach’, will join with Philip Dunne, Mark Pritchard, David Wright and Owen Paterson to officially release details on Friday, June 5.

The Shrewsbury MP will also be discussing the issue with up to 200 constituents at a public meeting at the Lord Hill Hotel tonight, Thursday. He has called the meeting to address the expenses scandal after seeing the strength of public feeling against prospective council candidates canvassing ahead of June’s local elections.

He said he believed the actions of some MPs had ‘trashed’ the reputation of all others and said he believed he had a duty to explain the situation to his constituents.

Last week, the Chronicle reported on the hostile reception received by a number of council candidates from residents in the wake of the scandal.

Mr Kawczynski said: “All of the county’s MPs have decided to release their expenses at the same time, and that will be on June 5. I will still be able to discuss my expenses at the public meeting, and they are beyond reproach. I’m very angry and disappointed about how some MPs have conducted themselves and because of their behaviour the reputations of all MPs have been trashed. So I feel I have a responsibility to let my constituents question me.”

Tonight’s meeting will run from 6.30pm to 8pm. Entry is free and there is no need to book a place. For more details call Mr Kawczynski’s office on 01743 466477.
