One of the members of a team which won hit TV competition It’s A Knockout! in 1969 is hoping to celebrate the 40th anniversary of that victory by tracking down his former team mates.
David Moore, now 62, said he had fond memories of the competition, which saw Shrewsbury crowned joint champions with German team Wolfsburg.
Almost 10,000 people turned out to watch the first round of the competition, played in the Quarry on May 15. They were rewarded as the home side demolished their opponents from Chester by 14 points to five, cheered on by a 15-strong team of ‘cheer girls’ in white jumpsuits provided by town companies.
After mastering the games of table leap-frog, tug-of-war, swings and footballs, and escalator football, the team qualified for the next round, and eventually made it through to the live final in Blackpool on September 3. “These games may have seemed crazy, however we spent a lot of evenings training for them which I believe was the reason for our success,” David said. “I’d be interested to know if there are still team members in the Shropshire area. I reside in Canada now and was just wondering what happened to the other members.”
The winning team included: Gail Evans, Jackie Chidlow, Ruth Elcock, Olwen Lea, Diane Whitney, Maureen Roberts, Robert Davies, Malcolm Ibbotson, David Moore, Geoffrey Hunt and Kelvin McDonald, Chris Maydew, Glyn Ashton, Charles Frank, Roger Ratcliffe, Margaret Ratcliffe, Tove Fjeld, Penny Kinsella, Philip Wardle, Bob Davies, Brian Wenlock, Bill Thelwell, Mike Franks, John Jones, Ken Bryars, Philip Poole, Gerald Downes, Stephen Bryant, Malcolm Cowdrey and Bernice Davies.
Led by team manager Stuart Lister, the team was ably assisted by Shrewsbury Town footballers Peter Dolby, Ken Howells, Joe Healey and Paul Bevan.
