‘It’s all about how we react’

Summer signing Craig Disley insists Shrewsbury Town are determined to ensure Chesterfield feel the full force of a backlash on Saturday as Paul Simpson’s men attempt to get their 5-0 midweek mauling at Dagenham out of their system.

Midfielder Disley labelled Town’s performance on Tuesday as “unacceptable”, admitting no Shrewsbury player could complain if they fail to hold onto their place at home to the Spireites, now managed by ex-Irish international John Sheridan.

“No-one can have any complaints if the team’s changed now,” said Disley.

“That’s the gaffer’s decision and between now and Saturday the lads have got to prove that they want to play for Shrewsbury Town and wear the shirt with pride. That’s what we will all be looking to do.”

The former Bristol Rovers man added: “It’s now about how you react. As it’s happened so early in the season, it’s given us a real good kick up the backside to get going now and push on.

“Saturday’s going to come round quick and we’ve got to push what happened at Dagenham to the back of our minds, but think about it and realise what went wrong.

“Saturday is a massive game for us and we have to prove to everyone that we’re better than we showed on Tuesday. We can’t dwell on it.”

Disley admitted Town failed to do themselves any justice as they were rolled over by the Daggers, but he’s hopeful they can bounce back from their painful lesson.

“We were miles off it all over the park on Tuesday and we’ve got to learn from it sooner rather than later because it’s a shock to the system,” he said.

Town boss Simpson, who will be hoping influential midfielder Paul Murray will be available after missing out in midweek through injury, added: “There are a lot of things we need to look at and try and put right as soon as we can.”

Meanwhile, ex-England manager Glenn Hoddle was at the Prostar earlier this week to watch his Academy side based in Spain for players released by English clubs beat a Town under-21 team 2-1 on the practice pitch behind the South Stand.

Town’s youth team were bolstered by the inclusion of young first team squad members Steve Leslie, Jake Simpson, Andreas Arestidou, Harry Hooman and Andre Gray.
