Dad John delighted for new skipper Ed

Proud dad John Foster admits he’s thrilled to see his son Ed follow in his illustrious footsteps once more after being named captain of Shropshire’s Minor Counties cricket side this week.

Foster snr, a prolific opening batsman, led Shropshire from 1987 to 1992 and he’s now looking forward to Ed, 24, who led Shrewsbury to a top six finish in the Birmingham  League premier division last season, taking on the county captaincy, writes STUART DUNN.

Foster has even more reason to keep close tabs on Shropshire’s progress under Ed – who has succeeded James Ralph in the top job – as  his youngest son Rob, the Shrewsbury allrounder, is also a key man in the county side.

“I’m very proud, very excited,” said Foster. “It’s a real fillip to see Ed following in my footsteps.”

With Ed scoring more Birmingham League top flight runs than anyone last season, his dad believes he will be able

to handle the added responsibility of captaining Shropshire.

“You’ve got so many jobs to think about that it’s important not to forget you’re in the team to do what you have always done as a player,” he said.

“The main thing at Minor Counties level is to remember it’s still a game and a hobby.

“Everybody wants to do well and win but you need to get the balance right and remember people are taking time off work to play for you and that it’s meant to be enjoyable.”

Ed said: “I used to go and watch a lot of dad’s games when I was younger and always wanted to one day play for Shropshire and to naturally be captain.”
