MEMBERS of a village action group are hoping to see an end to speeding motorists – after £20,000 of council cash was secured for extra signs and road markings.
The Worthen Action Group has been campaigning for the 30mph speed limit on the B4386 through Worthen and Brockton to be enforced after villagers raised concern of speeding cars doing above the speed limit – putting lives at risk.
But now, as a result of campaigners’ direct contact with the principal engineer at Shropshire Council, the villages will see extra signs and road markings in place by the end of next month.
Dave Elson, of Worthen Action Group, told the Chronicle: “Speeding is a problem we have had for a couple of years. The speed limit was originally reduced to 30mph through Worthen and Brockton, but there have been problems with drivers exceeding that.
“We have been looking at trying to get something done and now we have been told they have an extra £20,000 allocated for further enforcement through the two villages which will hopefully make a difference.
“People I’ve spoken to have considerable concern about the speeding. We have a school in the village and elderly residents who are walking to the shop adjacent to the main road.”
Last summer, the Chronicle reported on 70-year-old Gill Stickells who was left frightened and shaken after the wing mirror of a large lorry clipped her arm while she was walking her dog in Worthen.
