A s-mashing way to honour humble spud

spud.jpgWILDLIFE enthusiasts will hold a ‘spud-tastic’ event to mark Shrewsbury’s first ever Potato Day after taking the lead from a nearby village.

Staff at Shropshire Wildlife Trust came up with the idea after being involved with the organisers of Nesscliffe’s annual celebration of all things potato.

The event, which takes place at the trust’s visitor centre in Abbey Foregate on Saturday, will feature more than 40 different varieties of potato, priced at 15 pence per spud.

Kate Purslow, visitor centre manager, said: “We have attended the Nesscliffe event for many years and know how successful their event is so we thought it was about time Shrewsbury had one.

“As far as we are aware it’s the town’s first potato celebration and we’re hoping lots and lots of people come along to sample and buy our spuds on the day.”

Well known varieties such as Lady Balfour, Anya and Vivaldi will be on display, as well as more obscure potatoes such as Wilja, Marfona and Linzer Delikatess.

Potatoes will be supplied by Rebekah’s Veg and there will also be onion sets, vegetable seed and local plants and produce available to buy on the day.

Spud lovers will also be treated to potato themed refreshments during the event, which runs from 10am to 4pm, including soup, baked potatoes and cakes.

Entrance is free and children’s activities are also available. For more information contact Kate Purslow on 01743 284280.
