Shane set to hold fire on new deal

Defender Shane Cansdell-Sherriff says he will wait until a new Shrewsbury Town manager is appointed before deciding where his future lies.

Cansdell-Sherriff is one of several players who were offered new contracts by the club, with midfielder Kevin McIntyre quickly pledging to sign a new deal.

Aussie Cansdell-Sherriff insists he is very happy at the club but wants to talk to the new man in charge before committing his future.

“I am very happy at the club, I like the stadium and enjoy the atmosphere, but before I decide on my future I want to see who the club appoint as the new manager,” he said.

“I want to make sure we are on the same page and more importantly see if the manager wants to keep me.”

Cansdell-Sherriff, who made 41 league appearances for Town last season, reflected on a disappointing campaign for the club which saw them finish in 12th place in League Two –  nine points of the play-offs.

“We underachieved and were all bitterly disappointed not to get promoted,” he said.

“We had injuries, but not enough of our players played to a consistent high standard.

“Quite simply we didn’t score enough goals while we let in some silly ones at the other end which you can’t do at this level.

“I was surprised to see Paul Simpson go – he had a good relationship with the players.

“It is easy to blame the manager when things are bad, but we didn’t perform well enough as a team.”

Despite Town’s disappointing campaign, Cansdell-Sherriff has predicted big things for the club.

“Everything is in place for the club to go forward and I expect it to have a very good future,” he added.

Harry Hooman and Benjamin van den Broek were also among the players offered contracts to remain with the club.

But five players who are looking for new clubs after they weren’t offered new deals include captain Graham Coughlan, experienced midfielder Paul Murray and young trio Jake Simpson, Andre Gray and Andreas Arestidou.

First team coach Stuart Delaney and goalkeeping coach Dave Timmins have also both left, having been told their services will no longer be required.

Meanwhile, Town striker Dave Hibbert has joined Peterborough United on a three-year deal after turning down the chance to stay at Shrewsbury.

The 24-year-old was out of contract this summer but had been offered new terms to keep him at the club.

Hibbert joined Shrewsbury from Preston in 2007 and netted 30 goals in 111 league and cup appearances.
