The first images of what the newly refurbished £3.3 million Oakmeadow Primary and Nursery School in Bayston Hill will look like when it is completed in September 2011 have been revealed.
Shropshire Council bosses have unveiled their plans for the site of the current Longmeadow Primary and Nursery School, which merged with Oakland Primary School in September
2009.
Oakmeadow Primary and Nursery School uses both the former Longmeadow and Oakland school sites, with the younger pupils in the Oakland building.
This will continue to be the case until September 2011, when the former Longmeadow buildings will be fully remodelled, refurbished and joined together by a new link element, and all the pupils will move on to that site.
In a design and access statement on behalf of the applicants, it says: “The two existing buildings are currently very uniform in appearance and are atypical of 1960s and 1970s schools. The uniform appearance means the schools are not particularly inspirational as a teaching and learning environment.
“The planning application scheme has been developed in conjunction with the council and the school users. There have also been a number of staff, user and public presentations to develop the design.”
Norrie Porter, head of premises and planning for children and young people’s services at Shropshire Council, said: “The plans and timeline for the new school, which will be developed from the former Longmeadow school site remain unchanged, with work already started on the old infants building and other works to take place during 2010/11 with the new buildings ready by September 2011.
“The council is currently exploring options for the future of the former Oakland site, and are taking into account the views of local people including feedback from the survey commissioned by the local joint committee.”
