Former shop may become a bistro

A French restaurant chain is set to move into an empty town centre shop, creating up to 25 jobs, if plans get the go ahead.

The application submitted to Shropshire Council by Bistro Qui Ltd, a Liverpool based firm, is to transform the former Peter Briggs shoe shop at the top of Mardol.

The new restaurant, Bistro Jacques, would bring 15 full-time jobs, ten part-time jobs and be open seven days a week.

Mike Kilbride, agent for the applicants, said the company directors were keen to move into Shrewsbury because of its historic nature.

“The directors like the town and it will be the first venture outside of Liverpool. We’ll create 25 jobs and use locally sourced food so it’s all good news for the town. We’re hopeful it will take off in Shrewsbury and re-generate that part of town. The building’s been derelict for quite some time.”

Peter Bettis, chairman of Shrewsbury Business Chamber, said: “It’s absolutely brilliant news that people are investing in the town both in terms of tourism and local employment.

“I think all these different things are coming together in Shrewsbury now and it’s nice to see another business taking the chance in the town.

“I can only think of one other French restaurant in Shrewsbury so I would really encourage this bid and wish them every success.”

Public consultation ends this week and a recommendation to planning bosses is expected imminently.
